Going inside Osteoarthritis-related PAIN Phenotyping
Abstract
Osteoarthritis (OA), the most frequent joint disease, affects knee, hip and hand. Chronic joint pain, the clinical hallmark of OA, is responsible for an altered quality of life. To date, there is no curative treatment for OA, only symptomatic ones, not effective or poorly tolerated. A better understanding of OA pain is essential to provide new solutions to the patients. Thus, we need a holistic approach of the OA-related pain, encompassing joint clinical and imaging assessment, brain imaging, molecular/omics biomarkers as well as socio-psychological component.
The GO-PAIN group, composed of experts from different horizons and of patient, will aim to delineate the current knowledge about OA-related pain phenotyping by performing 3 systematic literature reviews (SLR) on clinical, imaging and biomarkers assessments of OA pain phenotypes. BIBOT, an artificial intelligence tool performing SLR automatically, will be also used.
From SLR results, we will collectively identify unmet needs and research agenda for such a holistic approach. The interdisciplinary expertise combined with patients pain experience will be critical for that. The ambition of GO-PAIN is to launch in 2 years a new OA cohort focusing on pain and addressing the identified unmet needs. A kick-off and final in person meetings will be scheduled and SLR follow-up will be virtual. The 3 SLR and an opinion paper on unmet needs will be submitted for publication. Dissemination will involve patient association.
