The Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO) is an independent agency, founded in 1928, that supports fundamental research in all disciplines in Flanders. The FWO provides the necessary funding on the basis of an interuniversity selection with scientific excellence as the only criterion.
The Fund for Scientific Research (F.R.S.-FNRS) is a research funding agency that promotes and supports basic scientific research in the French-speaking Community of Belgium. Founded in 1928, it mainly receives public subsidies, currently from the French-speaking Community of Belgium, the Walloon Region and the Federal Government of Belgium. The Fund supports individual researchers on the basis of the criterion of excellence by offering temporary or permanent positions; funding to research teams; grants and credits for international collaboration and scientific prizes.

The Fonds de la recherche en santé du Québec (FRQS) is the funding agency for health research in the Province of Québec and reports to the Minister of Economic Development, Innovation and Export Trade. Its mandate is to promote and provide funding for research, to disseminate knowledge, to train researchers, and to establish the partnerships required for developing Québec’s research and innovation system and the international reach of Québec research. The Estonian Research Council (ETAg) is a private body fulfilling public functions, responsible to the Ministry of Education and Research. Its main goal is to support the most promising research initiatives in all fields of basic and applied research including humanities and social sciences.

The National Institute of Health Carlos III (ISCIII) is the scientific and technical body to support the National Health System (NHS) and the main Public Research funder of biomedical and health research in Spain.

The predecessor to the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), the National Science Council (NSC) of the Executive Yuan, traces its history back to February 1, 1959. As such, the NSC was reorganized and became MOST on March 3, 2014 with a new organizational structure aiming to facilitate stronger links between academic research and industrial development. MOST promoted NSC’s tradition of innovative measures and programs. Since July 27th, 2022 the ministry transformed to the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC). The NSTC develops Taiwan’s technology strategy and coordinates the science and technology investments. By strengthening the coordination, and integrating the government’s technology policy across multiple departments, NSTC will foster an innovative and entrepreneurial spirit and creativity in science and technology, and thus boost Taiwan’s academic and industrial competitiveness at the international level.
