PROJECT: JTC2022 - Networking Chronic Pain: EndPain

European neuropathic pain tissue and data collection network

Abstract

Neuropathic pain is a particularly devastating and treatment-resistant form of chronic pain, arising from direct injury or disease to the nervous system. Drug development has been hampered by the scarcity of knowledge about what the local environment, with its complex neuro-immune-stromal cell interactions, looks like in patients. Our network aims to address this urgent omission, joining forces to facilitate the setup of larger-scale studies of relevant human tissues, such as skin, nerve and dorsal root ganglion. We will harmonise protocols and provide guidelines, not only for the processing of human materials, but also for any accompanying phenotyping. Focus will be on how we can best promote practises that will increase statistical power and allow inclusion into later meta-analyses, thus maximising reproducibility. We will also consider how to use human tissue data most efficiently for back-translation into human cell and animal models. Our results will be published in the form of a white paper. To achieve this, we have brought together a multi-disciplinary team of stakeholders that includes some of the most eminent clinical and pre-clinical neuropathic pain researchers, patient experts and collaborators from industry. By coming together, our network will help speed up the search for novel analgesics and ensure maximum benefit is derived from precious human tissues donated by generous individuals.
